Phoenixville stuns Boyertown on Silva’s OT goal

PHOENIXVILLE >> Tony Silva, Mitchell Coll and Michael Stokes all played large roles in what became a memorable day for the Phoenixville boys soccer team.

I got fouled,” said Silva, a senior forward. “Andre took a free kick and we (played a 1-2 combination), and I put it in the back of the net.

Silva scored the game’s lone goal in overtime, in the 87th minute, with an assist by senior Andre Souza as the Phantoms upset Boyertown, 1-0, in a Pioneer Athletic Conference crossover game at Washington Field Monday afternoon.

“That was our best game of the season so far. We played great.”

The victory pushed the Phantoms over the .500 mark in the PAC-10 Frontier Division at 4-3 (5-5 overall) and halted a frustrating four-game losing streak.  Boyertown dropped to 5-2 in the circuit (7-3 overall).

Silva’s goal found the lower left corner of the net to finally decide the issue after the Phantoms and Bears played 80 minutes of scoreless regulation time.

It was the first leg of a three-game week for Phoenixville, which plays two more crossover games against Owen J. Roberts on Wednesday night and then Perkiomen Valley on Friday afternoon.

“Give credit to Boyertown,” said Coll, a junior keeper who finished with five saves on the day, including one gigantic stop with less than one minute remaining in regulation time. “They got some shots on net and I got some saves. It was a team win today. We didn’t make any mental errors. It is always good to get a win against the bigger schools. We play Owen J. on Wednesday night, and they are a top 10 team in the district. This is a confidence-builder. This proves we can hang with the big schools. We’re here to play.”

The Phantoms have displayed major improvement for the past two years under head coach Mike Cesarski, who previously coached most of these players when they were a formidable contingent at the middle school level. Because they played under him before, Phoenixville realizes what Cesarski expects and how he wants them to perform on the field.

The Phantoms ended the afternoon with a 6-5 edge in shots. Coll recorded the shutout with some major help from the defense and midfielders.

Boyertown, led by senior midfielders Levi Roberts and Danny Yudt, had some solid shots and chances to score, but they were thwarted by Coll and the Phoenixville defenders.

Scott Didyoung, the 24-year veteran Boyertown head coach, was succinct in his remarks.

“We just weren’t at our best today,” said Didyoung. “That’s all I can say about today’s game.”

Boyertown’s goalie, senior Fred Agliano, made four saves.

“Boyertown’s a great team,” said Cesarski. “That was a very difficult game. We had our share of chances. We didn’t finish the way we should, but Tony scored the overtime goal. That is a big win for us to boost our confidence.”

Cesarski’s major goal all along has been to elevate Phoenixville’s boys soccer program in the PAC-10 as well as in District 1 circles. And in less than two years, he has already taken major strides to accomplish that feat.

“This is a big game for our confidence,” said Stokes. “We have two more games against big schools this week, and we hope to get at least one more win in those two games. On my throw-ins, we just need to get a head on it to put the ball in the net.”

Green’s three TDs help Phoenixville to first win, 48-20 over Methacton

PHOENIXVILLE >> Nasir Green has already shown a number of reasons why he is such a talented three-sport athlete at Phoenixville Area High School in football, basketball and basketball as a 6-1, 155-pound junior.

Green and a number of his Phoenixville teammates were able to do it again Friday night in a Pioneer Athletic Conference football game against Methacton at Washington Field.

Green caught three touchdown passes from junior quarterback Troy Rossman to help lead the Phantoms past the Warriors, 48-20, to gain their first victory of the season.

Green opened the scoring on a 52-yard TD catch as the first quarter ended tied at 7-all. The halftime score was 21-7 in favor of the Phantoms.

Green also had scoring receptions of 22 yards and 24 yards. Rossman also threw a 38-yard TD pass to Matt Palubinsky to finish with four TD passes on the evening.

Methacton made a nice comeback in the second half to cut the gap to 21-20, but Phoenixville tallied 27 unanswered points to win going away.

“Everybody contributed and we all played well,” said Green, who doubles in the Phoenixville secondary on defense and also serves as the team’s punter. “Troy and I are a good duo. Last week we got blown out, but this week the coaches told us to keep our heads in it and to play hard and that’s what we did. We want to make progress and keep on winning.”

Palubinsky added a second touchdown on a 1-yard run. Matt Garcia and Melvin Obando led the hard-hitting defense with Garcia returning a fumble recovery 53 yards for a score. Obando had a pair of recoveries. Ricky Williams blocked a punt. Green made an interception that was taken away on a penalty. Johnavin County tacked on a 6-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to cap scoring on the night. Matt Branch recovered a fumble, and junior Matt Valdovinos played a strong in his first start along the defensive line.

“We had to come out with a lot of intensity,” said Garcia. “We set the tone in the first half and got the momentum going. We played as a whole team. We played four quarters in the game and we never game up.”

Phoenixville second-year head coach Evan Breisblatt was thrilled to see his Phantoms win on their home turf following two losses to start the season against two strong teams in Great Valley and Spring-Ford.

“That was unbelievable,” said Breisblatt. “It was like a nailbiter. We made a huge run. Defensively, we were making stop after stop. It was just a great night by Nasir. He was unbelievable. We didn’t play well at times. We made a lot of mistakes, but we played hard and played until the end.”

With teams paying close attention to Palubinsky, Green took advantage of 1-on-1 coverage on the outside.

Ryan O’Toole scored two TDs for the Warriors on runs of 52 yards and one yard. Dylan Feaster caught a scoring pass from quarterback Jason Eckman.

“They are a big-play team,” said Methacton coach Paul Lepre. “We take pride in not giving up the big play, but tonight we did.”
